Grohe: Secure Big Data on AWS

GROHE builds up a secure and scalable big data solution.

Build up a secure and scalable big data solution

Consolidating the need of having a robust and reliable infrastructure where to run analysis, aggregation, correlation and transformation of thousands of IoT devices’ data across the globe, the Digital Innovations Department at Grohe, a leading global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings, was looking for a cloud provider able to:

  • Provide a secure infrastructure where to manage identities, applications and devices

  • Restrict and protect physical access to data

  • Be compliant with the most important security standards

  • Provide automation and security compliancy controls for periodic assessments

  • Seamlessly scale and ensure a multi-region setup is possible in a secure fashion

Leverage on AWS security and compliance services

Considering the volume and entity of the data being treated, and the intention of extending its IoT-connected devices offering, GROHE was looking for a partner to support them in the development and maintenance journey.

Storm Reply developed a serverless big data platform leveraging on a cloud-native principle and the integration of tools such as Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), AWS Glue, Amazon Athena, Amazon Kinesis, AWS Lambda, AWS Key Management Service (KMS), Amazon DynamoDB, etc. The whole solution is being seen internally as an important step for GROHE in their digital transformation journey, and as a perfect approach to stay competitive in this very dynamic landscape.

Global Presence – centralized approach

Data is collected, aggregated and distributed from different devices across the globe. The serverless platform leverages on the robustness and scalability of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).

By using AWS Key Management Service (KMS), Amazon Identity and Access Management (IAM), AWS Config, and other security-related AWS services, Grohe makes sure data is compliant with its own internal policies.

"When we first worked with the AWS toolset, we were amazed. Thanks to the professional support from Storm Reply, we were able to implement the foundations for more security and scalability that allow us to further grow our IoT bigdata business globally!"

Fast and efficient

By leveraging on AWS capabilities in combination with the expertise of Storm Reply, Grohe’s Digital Innovations Department was able to meet their plans in terms of time-to-market and security compliance requirements. The ability to encrypt data on the fly and keep different datasets separated on the security layer level was key for the success of the project. These features help to guarantee compliance with data protection and security regulation while preserving the agility needed to further grow the business.

When evaluating different cloud providers, one of the main levers that pushed the decision towards AWS was its customer and innovation-driven strategy. By keeping the offering up to date in terms of trends and latest technologies, AWS would allow Grohe to benefit from an agile, simple, fast and cost-effective development process.
