Cloud-Enabled Battery Solution - CEBS

IoT technology for greater sustainability in electromobility.

The transport revolution is battery driven

The shift away from fossil fuels is leading to a transport revolution, and batteries are becoming the main source of energy storage in the mobility sector. Battery-operated vehicles of various kinds, and for any target group, shape the image of downtown areas in European cities. The sustainability of the overall system and the durability of the batteries are crucial to success. The batteries are among the highest cost components for electric drives.

The performance and durability of batteries largely depend on changes in environmental conditions and wear and tear, among other factors. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the performance and temperature of battery cells, as well as control the usage and charge to extend the lifetime of batteries accordingly.

IoT battery status monitoring in the cloud

Concept Reply's Cloud-Enabled Battery Solution relies on the use of IoT sensors that monitor the status of the individual battery cells and transmit the data extracted from the BMS by means of an external gateway via mobile radio or WLAN to a cloud service for evaluation.

The solution reads and controls battery systems from all manufacturers in the cloud in real-time. The charging status and temperature are crucial for selecting the correct charging voltage. Real-time information on these parameters can therefore significantly increase the lifetime of the cell. This increases the market value of the vehicle. It also helps to avoid potential damage due to premature wear and the associated costs.

At the same time, the collected data can also provide information for the product development of the next-generation vehicle.

Data-driven use cases

The CEBS system enables both firmware over-the-air update processes and real-time status analysis of battery cells to optimize charging processes.

The overall system complies with standard security and encryption standards independent of the technology used: BMS to gateway, gateway to cloud and back.

Potentially, energy suppliers can also use the data from the charging status of the batteries connected to the buildings' electrical circuit to predict energy demand more accurately in order to manage electricity production more efficiently.

Sustainable urban mobility

The example of a battery-driven bus highlights the economic advantages of the system – for manufacturers and operators of the vehicle. In a battery-driven bus, several components are installed at different locations: in the rear, on the floor and on the ceiling. Different ambient temperatures prevail there in each case. These are actively balanced out by the BMS to increase efficiency.

Information about the batteries stored in the cloud (capacity, material) and processes (algorithms or calculations) for the charge load, help the BMS to optimally utilize the unit's many battery cells during operation and during charging to balance out fluctuations and choose charging intensities that are as conserving as possible. This is done as a function of the "learned" usage behavior of the battery unit.

Operators and manufacturers benefit from preventive monitoring in the form of reliable vehicle components. The benefits for companies or fleet operators are fewer downtime, longer lifetime and the reduced costs associated with this as well as a plannable residual value. The system thereby makes a valuable contribution to optimized battery management system – even across the fleet – and plays a decisive role in the range and dynamics of electric vehicles.
