The challenge
Migrate over 10,000 complex BI dashboards to a cloud-native platform to reduce maintenance overhead, lower licensing costs, and scale performance for BMW’s global teams.
The scenario
Providing 270 teams with reliable insights
Business Intelligence (BI) solutions are a key success factor in today's automotive industry. They form the basis for sound, data-driven decisions. This is why BMW Group has opted for a central BI platform that provides employees with useful data in an interactive and understandable way.
A solution that has been well received: about 270 teams access over 10,000 dashboards, which can be quickly tailored to the needs of individual employees and departments using various filters and parameters. However, maintaining the Tableau-based platform used to be very time-consuming for the company. At the same time, on-premises hosting resulted in high costs and limited scalability.
The solution
A future-ready BI ecosystem
Today, BMW benefits from a new cloud-based BI platform in Amazon QuickSight that offers:
How we did it
90 percent accuracy thanks to Gen AI
A manual migration of this scale would normally take 7 to 10 days per dashboard. By leveraging Generative AI via Amazon Bedrock, Storm Reply reduced this to just a few hours, with only 10 per cent of the data requiring manual intervention. The process is powered by a custom parsing script that automatically generates an intermediate JSON file for each dashboard based on Tableau data. This enables BI tools to read the data easily and provides a tool-agnostic solution, allowing future integration with other BI platforms.
Additionally, the solution integrates Amazon Q, a GenAI assistant, enabling BMW employees to interact with their data conversationally, accelerating insights and decision-making.
The result
The optimal basis for data-driven decisions
The amount of data that companies like BMW need to process to stay competitive is growing, and managing it is becoming increasingly complex. But with Storm Reply's solution, the car manufacturer is now well equipped benefiting from a rapid transition from traditional BI tools to cloud-native solutions, accelerated by GenAI.
Thanks to the new BI platform in Amazon QuickSight, BMW can continuously benefit from the latest advances in cloud computing and AI, and scale cost-effectively at any time. This gives them the ability to respond more quickly and flexibly to market changes and make more informed, data-driven decisions.
