The challenge

Magneti Marelli, a company specialising in the supply of high-tech products and systems for the automotive industry, needed to provide specialised training for workers working on new production lines, even before the equipment was available. In particular, the assembly of exhaust terminals for some new hybrid SUV models had to be tested, in order to simulate the operation and train the workforce while waiting for the machinery that would help with the operation.

The solution

Infinity Reply took up Magneti Marelli's challenge, developing a virtual reality application on the Oculus Rift S visor, capable of simulating the assembly and testing process of the hybrid SUV exhaust terminals assembly line. A 3D virtual reconstruction of both the assembly model and the work tools was carried out, recreating a virtual environment totally consistent with what would then be experienced inside the factory.

The user is positioned in a 3D environment that reproduces the workstations in 1:1 scale and, using controllers, is able to manipulate and interact with mechanical components and electronic instruments.

Virtual training & testing

The assembly simulation activity performed by the workers was structured in two phases.

Training: in a first phase, within the virtual environment reconstructed by Infinity Reply, the operator, through the visor, carries out an interactive training phase of the production process, with a set of signs and pop-up elements that show the various steps to be followed to carry out a correct assembly.

Testing: after the first training phase, necessary for workers to acquire the fundamental skills for the activity, they enter the actual testing phase. At this stage, each worker is given a set amount of time to perform the task, without the support of instructions, with only the presence of the virtual machinery and virtual tools, to recreate an environment as close as possible to the real one.

Infinity Reply is the Reply Group company specialised in the design and development of advergames and interactive 3D, augmented and virtual reality content and applications, leveraging the latest technologies to create innovative digital experiences. The areas of application for these solutions range from providing support to marketing and communication campaigns, to the creation of space-time travel experiences designed to allow users to appreciate artistic and architectural beauty from different time periods. Another key area of application is the training domain: these solutions make it possible to train workers in dangerous situations, while in total safety, using augmented and virtual reality experiences.
