You can set your own price, from the comfort of your own home and without unpleasant negotiations. This is what 1-2-3.tv offers its customers both on television and online on the internet. To be able to guarantee trouble-free bidding and buying even at peak times the broadcaster needs a highly reliable and fail-safe IT system. The system introduced by Cluster Reply uses technology based on an Active Data Warehouse and a separate BI platform. The data warehouse manages the company business processes from the BI system. To maintain the real-time operation of this data warehouse even in the event of physical server problems, to perform maintenance work even while online, and to ensure high reliability during peak times, Cluster Reply has migrated the existing system onto the SGL Server 2008 R2.
All central business processes of 1-2-3.tv will be controlled out of the BI system via a central data warehouse. The broadcaster’s business model means that it is often necessary to make very quick decisions. The data warehouse implemented by Cluster Reply provides permanently available data through real-time data services. It is important to have protection in case of a system failure to ensure optimum management of business processes.
Therefore 1-2-3.tv decided to combine the data collection in the central data warehouse and the BI platform in a cluster on the SQL Server 2008 R2. Both units operate separately within this cluster. All central data are stored on the separate Storage Area Network (SAN).
The Active Data Warehouse and the BI platform communicate over a so-called “Heart Beat Interface” and continuously exchange information about the current state of operation. If there is a system failure in one of the systems, operation continues without further intervention from the outside. The cluster manages and monitors all functions. If one node fails, the other cluster node immediately takes over its tasks. The data warehouse and BI platform always have access to all the key data, as these are filed in the central data store on the shared SAN.
The system implemented by Cluster Reply is highly reliable and highly scalable: at peak periods or for higher future needs the cluster can be extended at any time.
Trouble-free operation and a reduction in maintenance costs As the individual cluster units have the functionality to automatically supplement or compensate for failures of the other, it is possible to perform maintenance while they are in operation. This means that 1-2-3.tv can reduce its maintenance costs and provide its customers with constant, trouble-free bidding and buying on the internet. “We pay particular attention to providing the best service for our customers by ensuring trouble-free operation both on the internet and on television. The solution implemented by Cluster Reply now provides us with an IT system based on an Active Data Warehouse which gives our customers access to our services at any time, ensures our nearly fully automated operation and is always scalable as needed,” says Dr Oliver Grieble, IT Manager of 1-2-3.tv about their decision to introduce the cluster system.
