Transforming hours of manual research into consistent, traceable risk intelligence – increasing underwriting capacity while keeping experts in control.
The scenario
Turning fragmented information into underwriting intelligence
Every commercial policy starts with a fundamental question: what risk is the insurer taking on? Answering it requires underwriters to build a reliable picture of the prospective client before risk assessment and policy decisions can begin.
Corporate and financial information, ownership structures, regulatory data, ESG metrics, loss histories and recent news can be scattered across multiple internal and external sources. Depending on the complexity of the account, collecting, verifying and synthesizing this information can consume hours of expert time.
As risks and account structures become more complex, this manual research process limits underwriting capacity and makes it harder to provide every underwriter with the same comprehensive and verifiable information foundation.
The solution
From fragmented research to a complete risk dossier
Partnering with Cluster Reply, the insurer developed an AI-powered solution that automatically researches and compiles the information required for every new policy inquiry into a structured risk dossier. Instead of manually navigating multiple sources, underwriters receive an executive summary of the relevant risk information, with direct links to the underlying evidence. An interactive dashboard allows them to move seamlessly from summarized findings to the original source material, maintaining full visibility over the information behind each insight.
For deeper investigation, an integrated conversational AI assistant enables targeted queries across both the risk dossier and live external sources, with cited and traceable responses. By automating the information-intensive research phase rather than the underwriting decision itself, the solutionallows experts to dedicate more time to risk assessment and professional judgment while working from a consistent information foundation.
The technology
Multi-agent research powered by Azure AI
Built within Azure AI Foundry, the solution uses a multi-agent architecture to research multiple dimensions of commercial risk in parallel. When a new inquiry arrives, the system parses incoming emails and attachments and converts unstructured content into structured data queries.
Specialized AI agents then investigate specific risk dimensions, including corporate and financial data, ownership structures, recent news, regulatory compliance, ESG metrics and loss histories. The results are consolidated into a centralized data model that powers both the final risk dossier and the conversational assistant.
This approach combines parallel AI-driven research with source-level traceability, enabling underwriters to verify findings and access the original evidence whenever deeper analysis is required.
The impact
More underwriting capacity, with consistent and traceable risk intelligence
The solution reduces the average time required for preliminary risk research from around three hours to less than 60 minutes, with even greater time savings for complex, multi-entity accounts. Beyond faster research, the solution creates a standardized information foundation for underwriting. Every underwriter receives risk information organized according to the same structure, supported by verifiable sources and available for further investigation.
By reducing the effort required for information gathering, the insurer can dedicate more underwriting capacity to high-value risk evaluation while improving consistency and traceability across teams. The multi-agent solution also establishes a scalable foundation for extending AI support to additional stages of the commercial underwriting lifecycle.
