Case Study

ADR optimizes the intelligent management of airport assets with AI and IoT

Discover how Sense Reply supported the management of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino Airports through IoT, cloud, and artificial intelligence.

THE CHALLENGE

Enable a unified and real-time view of airport assets, transforming heterogeneous data into operational insights and faster maintenance actions

SCENARIO

Overcoming the complexity of airport assets

Rome Airports, a company of the Mundys Group, manages the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino and operates in a complex infrastructural ecosystem, where operational continuity, service quality, and efficiency depend on the ability to monitor distributed and interconnected assets. With the increase in traffic and the growing focus on sustainability, resilience, and operational performance, asset management requires tools capable of integrating data from sensors, legacy systems, facilities, and external sources.

The goal was to move beyond a reactive, intervention-based logic to evolve towards a predictive and data-driven model.

In this context, IoT, cloud, and artificial intelligence enable the construction of a unified view of the infrastructure, supporting continuous monitoring, prioritization of interventions, and a faster and more effective decision-making process throughout the operational chain.

THE SOLUTION

An IoT and AI platform to connect data, assets, and operations

Sense Reply, in collaboration with AWS, has developed a cloud-native IoT platform that collects, standardizes, and contextualizes operational data (OT) from airport assets, translating it into digital entities mapped to their respective physical assets (thermal, water, transportation, electrical, VUD, etc.) and making them available through REST APIs and dedicated dashboards for monitoring, analytics, and decision support.

The solution collects and normalizes information generated by connected devices, existing systems, and distributed infrastructures, creating a centralized view of operations. Based on this, artificial intelligence and machine learning support the identification of anomalies, the assessment of asset health, and the evolution towards a predictive maintenance model.

The goal is not only to monitor what happens, but to transform data into operational actions, connecting insights, KPIs, and maintenance processes within a scalable model designed to progressively extend to new assets and use cases.

Intelligent Asset Monitoring

The platform has been built on an AWS microservices architecture, designed to manage the entire data lifecycle: acquisition, integration, historization, analysis, and visualization.

Sense Reply has integrated legacy systems, IoT devices, and heterogeneous data sources within a data lake, a centralized system for data collection and storage, enabling real-time analysis and historical assessments of asset performance. The operational WebApp and the Business Intelligence layer based on Qlik provide users with intuitive views on alerts, KPIs, anomalies, and maintenance.

The integration with SAP EAM also allows linking the insights generated by the platform to maintenance execution, enabling the generation of work orders and making the transition from monitoring to operational management smoother.

The Result

Greater control, speed and efficiency in airport operations

The platform has enabled Aeroporti di Roma to move towards a more integrated, proactive and data-driven asset management model. With access to real-time data and a centralised view of its infrastructure, the organisation can now better monitor operational performance, anticipate potential issues and support faster, more informed decision-making.

Greater control over assets

Centralized and real-time monitoring of distributed infrastructures.

Faster interventions

Reduction of response times thanks to more immediate and accessible insights.

Energy efficiency

Optimization of consumption and support for a more sustainable operating model.

Data-driven decisions

Access to reliable data and KPIs to support faster and more informed choices.

Rome Airports (ADR), a company of the Mundys Group, manages and develops the airports of Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino, carrying out activities related to and complementary to airport management. Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino, which surpassed 50 million passengers for the first time in 2025, is one of three hubs in Europe and twelve worldwide with a Skytrax rating of 5 stars for excellent service quality, proclaimed by ACI World as the best airport in Europe for Service Quality in the category of over 40 million passengers for the ninth consecutive year. In the same category, in 2026 it received the ACI EUROPE Best Airport Award (40+ Million Passengers) for the eighth time since 2018. G.B. Pastine Airport in Ciampino has entered the elite of the best regional airports in Europe, achieving 4 Skytrax stars for the first time in 2025, the year in which ACI World recognized both airports with the highest level of accreditation for accessibility, confirming ADR's commitment to providing an increasingly inclusive travel experience throughout the airport system of the Capital.
