Microsoft Search gains innovative internal acronym feature

FOCUS ON: Microsoft,

In a recent announcement from Microsoft, the Redmond-based firm stated it had integrated a new acronyms feature to its current search facility.

The feature has been specially developed and produced to assist enterprise personnel in locating details about their own company’s sometimes confusing use of acronyms. According to experts at Microsoft, the new feature will discover definitions for the acronyms used automatically across a variety of applications, including SharePoint sites, Teams, Yammer channels, internal sites, and company documents.

The path to an optimum search facility

At Microsoft’s annual ignite event in 2018, the tech giant officially introduced Microsoft Search for the first time. In its description, it defined the cutting-edge search facility as an “enterprise search experience” and one that would be readily available throughout a host of services and software from Microsoft, including SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Bing, Office, Windows and Yammer.

Last year, at the 2019 Build event, the company announced general availability status for the streamlined search facility, giving more details of how it was powered using both AI technology in Bing and Microsoft Graph. Other information imparted by Microsoft at the event included the announcement that Microsoft Search will also be capable of displaying the content organisations store in Office 365, along with data indexed via services such as SAP, Salesforce, Google Drive and AWS through the use of intelligent connectors.

With the new acronym feature fully integrated, Microsoft Search has taken another step on its journey to becoming as effective and empowering a resource as possible for enterprise-level indexing of company content.

State-of-the-art internal searching

Organisations will be enabled to update the feature with their own unique and bespoke definitions of acronyms they currently use when referring to services, operations, groups, people and products. If an employee at a company searches an acronym or abbreviation, for example ‘RAC’, the facility won’t define it as the well-known Royal Automobile Club, but instead will filter the letter combination against those defined by company admins and display the internal definition instead.

As part of its promotion of its upgraded search engine, Microsoft has stated that regardless of whether searches pertain to files, sites, org charts, people, or even easy answers to popular questions any user can take advantage of Microsoft Search.

Enterprise admin capabilities will allow them to personally create and then publish each one of the acronyms in use via a single-item style publishing process. To save users time, Microsoft has thoughtfully integrated options to import or export using CSV type file extensions.
