A key event for the future of broadband networks

Net Reply, an active member of the Broadband Forum (BBF), will participate in the Broadband Forum Summer & Annual Member Meeting 2025, taking place at the Marriott City West Hotel in Munich from June 23 to 26, 2025. In addition, Net Reply will join the co-located BASe Technical Summit as a speaker and sponsor on June 26 and 27, 2025.

The Broadband Forum is a leading global organization that promotes the development of open standards, interoperable solutions, and best practices for the modernization of broadband infrastructure. Its mission is to enable digital transformation through scalable, secure, and high-performance networks, supporting the evolution of digital services for both businesses and citizens.

Net Reply’s Presentation:
Advanced Wholesale Services with OLT Whitebox/Greybox

During the BASe Technical Summit, the technical speech titled "Advanced Wholesale Services with WhiteBox/Greybox OLT" is presented by our Technical Program Manager Antonio Marsico, in collaboration with Bruno Cornaglia (Fixed Access Senior Manager at Vodafone Group) and Luca Andreani (Chief Project Engineer – Service R&D and Proposal Engineering at Digital Platforms). The presentation illustrates a possible implementation of Fixed Access Network Sharing (FANS), based on the Broadband Forum standard, featuring multiple instances of D-OLT, and oriented towards advanced wholesale services.

The topic of Open Access is gaining increasing importance across Europe, driven by the ongoing demand to expand ultra-broadband service coverage.

From Shared Model to Customized Network: The Potential of Open Access

Access Models Compared

There are two possible implementation models:

  • Level 1, where each operator installs their own OLT;

  • Level 2, where a single company managing the fiber network installs a shared OLT used by multiple operators.

The BBF FANS as an implementation of Open Access

FANS can represent an evolution of the Level 2 Open Access model, making it more similar to the Level 1 approach.

Dedicated D-OLTs and SDN Solutions on the BAA Platform

Vendors have already demonstrated the feasibility of FANS through SDN-based solutions. Building on this, a further step is proposed: a solution featuring a dedicated D-OLT instance for each operator on top of the BAA platform, using whitebox/greybox OLTs.
