Use Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) as a speedboat for IT

With Kubernetes, app developers orchestrate container applications in cloud environments or hybrid IT infrastructures. New microservices can be deployed, updated, and, most importantly, scaled faster during operation. Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) is a Microsoft solution that further simplifies containerization.

The motorboats are more maneuverable and more agile than large tankers. The open-source solution Kubernetes follows this philosophy.

With Kubernetes, application developers can centrally manage microservices and containerized interfaces at the control level. Even complex applications with distributed containers, databases, file shares, and other resources run on Kubernetes. Thanks to the decentralized structure of all nodes and containers, developers can make their applications available more quickly and manage them securely in the event of high temporary loads.

Kubernetes and the Azure Kubernetes service

Kubernetes derives from Greek and means “helmsman.” The namesake platform allows for automatically controlling the scaling and management of container applications and facilitates their maintenance and management. In 2015, Kubernetes was donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which was founded concurrently. Developers describe their solution as “a portable and extensible open-source platform for managing workloads and container services that facilitates both configuration and automation. It is a large and rapidly growing ecosystem.” Kubernetes services, support, and tools are widespread and continuously expanding.

Based on this, Microsoft developed Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). With AKS, IT administrators can make Kubernetes clusters productive and manage them on Azure. The advantage of AKS is that it further reduces administrative tasks and automates routine activities even more. AKS supports the operations team in connecting and automatically scaling workloads and additional resources as needed. Users control an almost unlimited number of compute nodes through the AKS dashboard.

Containerization for rapid production

Cluster management is free; only resources such as nodes, virtual nodes, storage, and uptime SLA are charged. Even the most complex applications can be easily defined, deployed, debugged, updated, and automatically containerized by developers.

You are free to choose your methods and means: regardless of the programming language you develop or the operating system that needs to run in a container, there are no limits for you. For example, applications can run simultaneously in Windows and Linux containers in the same cluster. Developers can configure Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) in an AKS cluster. This reduces the release cycles of new applications. Administrators use the Azure portal to monitor their applications. This enables real-time fault detection and optimization of applications during operation.

AKS for business success

AKS users benefit from the advantages of a holistic approach to managing the entire IT infrastructure:

  • The AKS dashboard minimizes time and costs for the entire application lifecycle.

  • Automation routines alleviate the burden of monitoring and maintaining the infrastructure. This is ensured by the automatically configured monitoring functions based on Prometheus.

  • With Azure monitoring, developers enable the logging of applications and the Prometheus metrics with a click.

  • With Azure Arc, developers monitor both on-premises and cloud clusters.

  • It is possible to implement Single Sign-On with Azure Active Directory.

  • With Azure policies, you can also deploy compliance guidelines in AKS clusters.

  • Azure Advisor optimizes with real-time personalized recommendations during deployment. These are based on many years of experience working with thousands of enterprise customers.
