Digital trasformation

Siram, a subsidiary of the Veolia group, leader in the design, supply and sustainable solutions for the management of energy, water and waste services has embraced the idea of the cloud as a fundamental pillar for its technological choices. For this reason, in 2017 it launched a Digital Transformation program with the aim of making the company more streamlined and dynamic through the adoption of the first generation Oracle Public Cloud.

Linked by a historic relationship with Oracle, Siram first began with the adoption of the Oracle Database on premise for the management of its core business and continued in a private cloud environment. Siram pioneered the adoption of the Oracle Cloud for planning, budgeting and reporting by choosing Oracle EPM-Enterprise performance management cloud and ERP Cloud for procurement, inventory, project and financials processes.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

During 2020 it began the migration of its systems on Public Cloud Oracle to the second generation OCI (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure), once again relying on the expertise of Red Reply, a company specialised in the design and implementation of solutions and services based on Oracle Cloud platforms.

The factors that led to the choice of a migration to OCI were manifold: the existing environment did not allow optimal management of network security, the licensing model was no longer suited to the business needs, the business applications were not uniformly distributed on different environments and the existence of a single VPN shared between different environments. One of Siram's main needs was to not create any disservice to users during the migration process.

Main characteristics of the project

Siram thus relied on Red Reply, Oracle Managed Service Provider partner, for the implementation, in 2020, of the migration of the main mission critical systems on the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The systems subject to migration were heterogeneous both in terms of functionality (e.g. Databases, Oracle SOA, Oracle ICS, fuel supply management software, company treasury management software), and technology stack (Oracle and not Oracle Workloads). With the porting on OCI, an architectural solution was created that introduced significant innovations:

Reliability
segmentation of environments with dedicated VPN

Subnets
each environment has a subnet available for each type of application

Distribution
new application distribution model between environments

Security and identity
efficient and totally secure access to the various Web services on Cloud platforms

Red Reply has therefore guaranteed efficient and totally secure access to the different Web services hosted on the various cloud platforms, for the different user profiles, through Single Sign On. The migration to the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure also had to take into account multi-cloud scenarios such as the integration of the pre-existing Identity Management system based first on Active Directory, then on Google Cloud Platform, with the new Oracle PaaS services such as Fusion ERP and JCS. Cross cloud digital identity management has also been integrated and improved thanks to the adoption of the Oracle Identity Cloud Service (IDCS), an innovative service that offers all identity and access management functions. The integration envisaged the use of Oracle IDCS for profiling management (both of administrative and application users) and of the Google Cloud Platform for authentication management.

Red Reply's solution

Thanks to its consolidated experience and a migration model designed ad hoc by Red Reply, the running of the applications was guaranteed, as well as migration speed, with an impact on customers’ operations that was almost equal to zero during all phases of the project.

The implemented solution has brought considerable advantages to Siram including: better security management through the segmentation of environments and networks, better performance thanks to the use of the latest generation infrastructure and greater control of the infrastructure and costs also thanks to a licensing model that is closer to customers’ needs.
