The new security paradigms for the Internet of Things

To address security for the Internet of Things (IoT), many of the current methods will have to be revisited and adapted for a connected world with an ever-greater need to enable third parties to develop smart-device applications.

FOCUS ON: Internet of Things, Security,

Reply is actively involved in the nascent IoT market. Our platform, HI Reply, provides a system layer allowing various devices, sensors and actuators to be integrated with applications hosted on dedicated servers or in the cloud. Thus, it supports the implementation, installation and management of the advanced solutions that embody up the emerging world of the IoT.

MANAGING COMPLEXITY IN THE INTERNET OF THINGS

The HI Reply platform provides a quick and easy way to integrate the various subsystems needed to build complex solutions in line with IoT paradigms. The growing complexity of these intelligent systems (like smart systems, smart grids, smart cities, and e-health applications) presents not only the usual development and integration challenges but also new problems of keeping the hosted applications secure to use.

SECURITY BY DESIGN

Reply’s framework approaches security issues through techniques based on constructing intrinsically secure messages independent of the transmission channel in order to ensure the integrity of all the exposed web services. In addition, all the functional building blocks for an application security layer – from authentication and authorisation to data confidentiality and integrity – are natively available for application developers using the HI Reply platform.

SECURITY FOR DEVICES

As the IoT evolves into new scenarios, more and more devices are running third-party applications. Without adequate protection, this opportunity can become a real threat to device security. Using a combined approach uniting heuristic monitoring techniques and sandboxing methods, HI Reply solves the device security problem while leaving customers free to allow third parties to develop applications.
